New year, new….organizational systems? The past year has been challenging (to say the least) and an opportunity for a new start has never sounded so good. With all of us spending more time at home, we can’t think of a better way to begin the New Year than refreshing the space you spend all of your time in so that it works best for you!
Of course, we get that deciding to make an official New Year’s resolution can be tricky… However, resolutions can be a great way to kick-start new habits, pursue new interests, or inspire you to finally start that passion project you’ve been dreaming of. Regardless of your stance on official “New Year’s resolutions,” if you are looking to make getting organized a part of your new year – we’re here for you! Below are our top tips on how to make organization a part of your new year and how to make sure it sticks:
Be Specific
This may seem obvious, but we promise it’s an essential first step. Wanting to get organized can be a life-changing decision, but it can look a little different for everyone. Consider taking a more detailed look at what you envision for yourself and where you might be running into problems with disorganization. Is there one place in your home that your life is centered around and deserves immediate attention? Are you having trouble remembering what you already own because so much is stored out of sight? Maybe you have accumulated more things than you ever intended and you’re not sure where to start? Pinpointing where you want to focus your attention and identifying any notable roadblocks you are facing is a great first step.
Products v. Behavior
This can be a tricky one. It is so tempting to run wild in The Container Store in search of the perfect organizing product (we love it there, too…), but we can guarantee that a well-placed bin will not single-handedly transform your space. Overcoming disorganization of any kind is best accomplished through a combination of behavioral changes and systems put in place to help maintain them. We love finding the perfect sized bin, color coding household items, and making distinct labels- but all of these tools are designed to help maintain new organization habits, not do the organizing for you. We won’t lie, the “behavioral change” part of getting organized is not as fabulous or as fun as the color coding and labeling, but we know you can do it!
You’re Not Alone
Having an “accountability buddy” is a common and effective practice in staying physically active or pursuing a personal project, so why not use the same method to stay organized? Consider getting your friends and family involved in your organization journey, especially if you share a home with them or they visit regularly, by walking them through any new systems that have been put in place, identifying any old habits that are actively being avoided, and empower them to play a role in maintaining organization.

Be Kind to Yourself
Not every closet will look picture-perfect, no matter what you might see on Instagram… Stay focused on results that work for you. Try not to beat yourself up for holding on to too many things or waiting so long to make a significant lifestyle change and celebrate the fact that you’re starting now. We’ve seen how big of an impact getting sorted can make in someone’s life and we can’t wait for you to dive in!
